Judge William M. “Bill” Wieland

THE STORY BEHIND THE TOURNAMENT

The “Judge” as he was commonly known was an avid golfer.  He and his wife Marie were two of the original founders of

St. Alban’s Anglican Cathedral.  Marie still volunteers her time and efforts at the church and usually attends the 8:00am service.  Judge Wieland was a devout Christian and rarely ever missed a church service.  He was always at church very early on Sunday mornings to start the coffee and open the buildings.  He was very instrumental in the growth of the church providing many years of sound legal advice and guidance to the leadership of the church, especially to Bishop Grundorf.  The “Judge” and the “Bish” would frequently be seen at 6:30am on the first tee at the Lake Buena Vista Golf Course. 

Judge Wieland served as a Judge in the Central Florida area for more than 23 years.  His jurisdiction included Orange, Osceola, and Lake Counties.  He was appointed to serve in his capacity in 1970 by Governor Claude Kirk.  He was reappointed to his position and was one of the longest serving Judges of Compensation Claims in the State of Florida.  He was invited to sit temporarily on the workers’ compensation appellate court in Tallahassee.  On February 3, 1993 while at work he suffered a fatal heart attack. 

Following his death, Joel Swann and Kennie Wieland, the Judge’s daughter-in-law, presented to the church a proposal to honor the Judge by holding a golf tournament in his memory.  The Vestry of the church quickly approved the idea and the first tournament in his memory was held in the spring of 1993.  It was a huge success due in large part to the dear friends and local attorneys who loved and respected him.  Since then the Judge Wieland Memorial Golf Tournament has been a very popular event, which focuses on fun and fellowship. 

The proceeds from the event have always gone to support the church and have helped to build new Sunday school classrooms, improve the playground, beautify the Memorial Garden and many other aspects of the church.

The Judge Wieland Memorial Golf Tournament is a great event which honors a great Christian and wonderful humanitarian, Judge William M. “Bill” Wieland.
